IELTS ESSAY TOPIC-21

Some people think that physical strength is important for success in sport, while other people think that mental strength is more important. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

The debate on which one, the mental or the physical strength in an athlete's life should take precedence over the other, is ever so lasting. It would be hard for anyone to pick a side in such a vital discussion, I am slightly bent towards the idea that mental strength needs more attention than physical strength.

First and foremost, there is no denying that all sportsperson needs to maintain their physical health to perform on any stage. All physical attributes such as stamina, body fat, muscle density, weight, etcetera are accountable for an athlete's performance. For instance, a wing spiker in volleyball needs to have a good muscle density on his shoulders to have a rotatory motion to spike hard otherwise it could lead to injuries like shoulder dislocation. Thus every player needs to maintain desired physical condition as per the requirement of the sport.

However, mental health is equally, if not more, important for any athlete. Every sport needs strategies to win, there is hardly any sport for which this is untrue. For example, in badminton the player needs to know the right moment to land a kill smash to score point for which he needs the awareness which cannot be accomplished unless the player is mentally fit for the game, so proving the point that mental strength is crucial for any sport. Furthermore, a mentally fit player is bound to know what physical attributes he lacks and would try to work on them, hence with mental strength the physical strength is bound to follow which some people do not understand.

In conclusion, I would state physical strength is important without a doubt but mental strength needs to be prioritised.
