The diagrams below show how houses can be protected in areas which are prone to flooding. Write a report for a university, lecturer describing the information shown below.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant. You should write at least 150 words.
The diagram illustrates the solution developed over the years to prevent the houses from flooding in the areas that are most likely to face such calamity.
Two such cases noted are with a stopband and other is no stop-bank. Considering the case of stop-bank, here the reason for flooding is not the river but the phenomenon known as internal runoff. The stop-bank is made at the edge of the river to evade the situation of flooding but it leads to another issue referred as internal ponding. Whereas for no stop-bank, the reason is obviously the river itself. To prepare for these chaotic situation, first the 100-year flood level is observed and the construction following that is dependent on the figures deducted.
The houses in such prone areas have a peculiar set of construction as they are elevated from the ground level, which is maintained at such height by sparing a margin of at least 300 mm from the observed 100-year flood level for the case of without stop-bank or the noted ponding level in case of the stop-bank.
