IELTS ESSAY TOPIC-16

Few people devote time to hobbies nowadays. Say why you think this is the case and what effect this has on the individual and society in general.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

The hectic lives and competitive environment around have driven people away from fun recreational hobbies they used to pursue. Hobbies like playing musical instruments, singing, cooking, playing sports, etcetera are making their way out of people's lives.

The reasons for such downfall in hobbies could be: first, the cut throat work atmosphere where each one needs to prove their worth otherwise they can be easily replaced. Second, the flexible working hours that are introduced due to the recent pandemic situation is negating the borders between the personal and professional life which spares little to no time for hobbies. Lastly, people have to get more involved with their children these days in comparison to before because next generation has it hard as the academics are getting a lot harder making them mentally fragile so they are in a dire need of their parent's attention.

As a result, people do not have anything to rejuvenate themselves causing them mental stress and could lead to other health issues like obesity, heart diseases, etcetera. This not only affects an individual but also the society as there are some traditional activities that should be taught to the children these days to let them stay rooted to their culture and traditions, for example the art of 'rangoli' making is unknown to many children today. It is important to teach children the values and norms that have been passed down from ancestors.

To conclude, it is important that people should spare some time for the hobbies for their own mental as well as physical health and teach their children traditional hobbies to keep the culture alive.
